Metropolitan Issues Commission

The Metropolitan Issues Commission monitors local concerns affecting the quality of life in the Baltimore Metropolitan area.

Recognizing that social conditions are constantly changing, the commission's agenda responds to current issues confronting the community, such as homelessness, poverty, welfare, regionalism, immigration, healthcare, gun control, and discrimination.

We develop policy on these issues as they affect the community and local agencies.

Child Nutrition Seder

The Baltimore Jewish Council (BJC) partnered with Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on April 9th at City Hall for “A Passover Seder Dedicated to Child Nutrition and Hunger Awareness.”  Rabbi Jonathan Panitz from Bolton Street Synagogue led around 30 participants including Baltimore City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young, Councilwoman Rochelle “Rikki” Spector, members of Mayor Rawlings-Blake’s administration and representatives from many of the BJC’s partners like Maryland Hunger Solutions and the Baltimore Interfaith Coalition.  Al Scharbach from the Archdiocese of Baltimore said, “Thank you for including the Archdiocese and Baltimore Interfaith Coalition in this event. It was very instructive, and even inspiring. A couple of your other guests and I were also able to make some helpful connections.”

Participants brought non-perishable food items that were donated to the GEDCO CARES Food Pantry.  Also joining us for the seder was Principal Ken Cherry and Assistant Principal Debbie Santos from Furman L. Templeton Elementary School in Baltimore.  The Council has been partnering with the school for a few years.  Templeton Elementary is a Title I School and also has its own food pantry for school families that needs donations.   Principal Cherry said about the seder, “My Assistant Principal and I talked about how the Seder and the message delivered at that time so aligned with what we are trying to accomplish with our students. I had actually traveled home that weekend to have a late Easter with my family and was very excited to share what I had learned with them.”
