SUMMARY:Navigating the New College Year: Addressing Antisemitism on Campus
DESCRIPTION:As the new academic year approaches\, we understand the concerns many Jewish parents and community members have regarding the safety and well-being of our students on college campuses. With incidents of antisemitism on the rise\, it’s crucial that we come together to equip ourselves and our students with the knowledge and strategies needed to navigate these challenges. We are proud to offer this webinar\, “Navigating the New College Year: Addressing Antisemitism on Campus” for parents and community members at-large! \nJoin us Thursday\, September 5 at 4:00 p.m. for an insightful discussion with expert speakers featuring a Security Director about campus safety\, a Federation professional on the intersection between campus issues and the wider Jewish community\, and a representative from Hillel on the support and advocacy efforts available to students on campus. This session will provide valuable insights into the current landscape of antisemitism on campuses\, practical advice on how to respond to incidents as community members\, and ways to build stronger support networks for our students. \nThis is an essential opportunity to learn about the ways the Federation system is supporting and empowering students as they embark on their college journey. We encourage you to join us and take an active role in addressing these critical issues. Please register at your earliest convenience to secure your spot. Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to the safety and well-being of our community. \nClick here to register for this webinar.

SUMMARY:Screams Before Silence - movie screening & panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, September 8\n4:30 – 6:30 p.m.\nat Har Sinai Oheb Shalom Congregation \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScreams Before Silence\, a powerful new documentary led by Sheryl Sandberg\, captures first-person testimony from survivors\, first responders\, eyewitnesses\, released hostages\, forensic experts\, and advocates. Their harrowing accounts reveal the uncompromising truth: that Hamas used rape\, assault\, and mutilation in a brutal rampage of gender-based violence. The world needs to know. We must bear witness\, and we must learn how to take action to prevent these heinous acts from happening again. \nJoin us for a screening of this important piece. A panel discussion will follow the film. \n\n\n\n\nPlease note: Screams Before Silence contains accounts of sexual violence against women. We encourage you to take care of your mental and emotional health; a mental health professional will be on-site\, and attendees will be welcome to exit the room at any time.

SUMMARY:Shuk to the Core - Israel Vendor Fair
DESCRIPTION:The BJC is joining with partners from across the community to help sponsor “Shuk to the Core” at Beth Tfiloh on Wednesday\, December 4\, from 3 to 9 p.m. Approximately 40 Israeli merchants who have been severely impacted by the current situation in Israel will be making Baltimore their first stop on a 3-week tour of U.S. Jewish communities. \nAreyvut has been sponsoring Israel Vendor Fairs in New York and New Jersey since October 7th as a way to provide much-needed financial support to the many Israeli vendors who are dependent on sales to Israeli tourists and are currently desperate for customers. They will bring a wide range of merchandise\, including art\, jewelry\, Judaica\, Kippot\, crafts\, books and more. Falafel and pizza will be available for purchase\, and there will be supervised children’s activities from 5-9 pm. \nThere is a $5 admission charge for adults ($18 max per family) attending the Shuk to help subsidize vendors’ air fare and the cost of shipping their merchandise to the U.S. Timed entry tickets are recommended to be purchased in advance to assist with crowd control and parking. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:10/7: 100 Human Stories
DESCRIPTION:10/7: 100 Human Stories\nMonday\, December 16\, 2024 \n6:30pm – 8:00pm \nBeth El Congregation – Myers Auditorium \nCost: $10 (includes a subsidized copy of the book) or free of charge if not purchasing a book \nThe recently published book 10/7: 100 Human Stories is a masterful work of investigative journalism by acclaimed Haaretz reporter Lee Yaron\, chronicling the October 7 massacre that ignited a war through the stories of more than 100 civilians. These stories are the products of extensive interviews with survivors\, the bereaved\, and first responders in Israel and beyond. At a time when people are seeking a deeper understanding of the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and how internal political turmoil in Israel has affected it\, 10/7 takes a fresh approach\, offering answers through the stories of everyday people\, those who lived tenuously on the border with Gaza.  \nThe Baltimore Jewish Council invites you to a conversation with Lee who will share some of the stories she heard and speak about her experience of writing this book and the insights she gained. A book signing will follow the program. \nA subsidized copy of the book can be purchased in advance for $10 or on the night for $15 (cash only – retail price $30).* \nQuestions? Contact Kate McDonald (kmcdonald@baltjc.org) \n\n* Please note this is an in-person program only. In the event you have purchased a book in advance and then are unable to attend the program\, we will make arrangements for you to receive your book. \nREGISTER HERE\n  \n

SUMMARY:Even Still?: Haredim and the Draft since October 7
DESCRIPTION:In a landmark decision on June 25\, the Israeli High Court ruled unanimously that since June 2023—when the last draft-exemption law expired—no legal mechanism exists to exempt Haredim from the draft and the government must work to enlist them immediately. In the months since\, this decision and the outcry that it prompted from the Ultra-Orthodox community have continued to make the headlines. The human costs of fighting a multifront war since October 7 have only intensified the debate. \nThe BJC invites you to join a webinar with Professor Noah Efron\, author of Real Jews: Secular vs. Ultra-Orthodox and the Struggle for Jewish Identity in Israel\, who will unpack the history of the Haredi draft exemption law\, the significance of the High Court’s decision\, and the ways in which it has been received by different segments of Israeli society. \nREGISTER HERE
